Peer - Provoke - Present - Prompt - Practice

BiOasis by Lisa Cochrane

BiOasis is an innovative and unique reimagination of traditional funeral homes and crematoriums. The focus of this space is Bio Cremation and returning bodies to the Earth. The unique memorial space allows loved ones to visit and engage with the water bulbs (that replace traditional headstones) in a unique way.

provoking

A personal position that I feel offers some insights about this weird, nebulous and slippery thing called interiors.

A space where anything is possible! It should provoke feelings both physically and mentally and should heighten your senses to create an extraordinary experience.

An interior can be an inclusive or exclusive place that makes people feel both comfortable and uncomfortable in their surroundings.

prompting

Case Studies taken from "PROMPT: Socially Engaging Objects and Environments" by Tamie Glass

Liquidrom In Tempodrom

Berlin, 2002

A pool that invites visitors to float while listening to an underwater concert.

I like how the water is used as a middleman between the performer and the listener to create an immersive yet relaxing experience.

On Tension

London, 2011

A room divider that encourages interaction and touch.

I like the simplicity of the installation as well as how it can connect users with each other and their scenes of touch. It encourages users to explore the material with their hands and create unique, creative patterns.

De Hogeweyk

Weesp , Netherlands, 2010

A village that supports people living with severe dementia.

This village gives dementia patients a sense of normal and allows them to conduct daily tasks in as normal a setting as possible. Its non-clinical and sterile design creates a much more supportive and comforting environment.

Eenmaal

Amsterdam, 2013

A restaurant that only has tables to seat single diners.

This breaks restaurant stereotypes and creates a space where lone diners do not feel out of place or pushed to eat in company. It encourages diners to disconnect and focus on themselves.

practicing

Each of my chosen companies pride themselves on their ability to not conform to the usual design egos and beliefs. They create individual, quirky and innovative spaces that allow for extraordinary user experiences wither that be in a nightclub or an office. Every project is different!

* Practices explored in order of images; Penson, Counterfeit Studio, Hawkins/Brown, MVRDV

and Ben Kelly*
