Body Building - Part Two

An exploration of the human body and its relationship with space

creating a body building

Inspired by Gertrude Grunow's Theory of Harmonization class at the Bauhaus, I have created a yoga space for Duncan of Jordanstone students to destress and increase their productivity.

Grunow advocated the theory that a persons ability to express themselves depends on laws rooted in the persons sense of colour, sound and form. One of her students said, "throughout the entire duration of the training, a practical harmonisation theory is given on the basis of the unity of tone, colour and form, with the air of balancing the physical and psychological characteristics of the individual."

A study in the "Journal of Physical Activity and Health" showed that people were able to focus their mental resources, process information quickly, more accurately and also learn, hold and process pieces of information more effectively after 20 minutes of yoga compared to 20 minutes of aerobic exercises such as jogging. This helps show that Grunow's work at the Bauhaus was a great way to increase student productivity.

My design aims to take Grunow's theory and the study from the "Journal of Physical Activity and Health" to give current art and design students the opportunity to increase their mental creativity.

I have created a space that guides the user through a basic yoga routine using lighting and symbols to heighten their creativity and productivity. My space will be located on level 5 of the Matthew building as it is a space that is easily accessible and is frequented by DJCAD and Dundee university students.
